In a heart-stopping showdown at the Filoil EcoOil Centre, Barangay Ginebra showcased their indomitable spirit as they clinched the 2023 Batang PBA 11-Under Division championship with a narrow 61-59 victory over San Miguel Sunday, July 2.
The Baliwag brothers, Joaquin Miguel and Julian Mateo, once again emerged as the heroes of the day, delivering the pivotal plays that propelled the Batang Gin Kings to an unblemished record of four wins throughout the tournament.
Joaquin Miguel, the 11-year-old dynamo, exhibited exceptional skills and led the scoring charge with an impressive 20 points. Meanwhile, Julian Mateo chipped in with 10 points of his own and showcased nerves of steel as he made crucial baskets during the game’s decisive moments, securing Ginebra’s triumph over potential defeat.
With the clock ticking down and an eight-point deficit staring them in the face, Ginebra faced an uphill battle. However, Joaquin Miguel took it upon himself to rally the troops, spearheading a remarkable 13-2 run that included a jaw-dropping and-one basket.
The relentless surge propelled Ginebra into the lead, with the scoreboard reading 57-54 in their favor. The team’s resilience and never-say-die attitude were on full display as they refused to let the opportunity slip away.

Julian Mateo echoed his brother’s sentiments, expressing his gratitude to their parents, teammates, and coaching staff. “Para po ito sa mga parents namin, teammates at coaching staff. On the opposing side, San Miguel made a valiant effort, with Fritz Avillano leading the team’s scoring with 14 points. Andrei Ancheta contributed 12 points, while the Cruz brothers, Thiago (10) and Theon (9), showcased their skills and led by example.
