Barangay Ginebra secured their PBA Philippine Cup playoff entry and bolstered their quest for a twice-to-beat advantage by overpowering Converge FiberX with a decisive 105-93 victory at the Aquilino Pimentel Jr. International Convention Center on Saturday night, April 27.

Christian Standhardinger spearheaded the Kings’ dominant display with a spectacular 33-point performance, coming close to a triple-double. Standhardinger’s scoring prowess was complemented by the solid all-around contributions of Maverick Ahanmisi and Scottie Thompson, who each delivered impressive stat lines.

Ahanmisi showcased his shooting prowess, tallying 17 points including four three-pointers, while also dishing out seven assists and grabbing six rebounds. Thompson, displaying his trademark versatility, contributed 10 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists, showcasing his return to form following an injury.

The Kings broke open a tight contest in the second half, outscoring Converge 35-21 in a pivotal third-quarter surge after heading into halftime tied at 48-all. Standhardinger, Ahanmisi, and Thompson were instrumental in this decisive run, pushing Ginebra ahead and firmly establishing control of the game.

Ralph Cu (13 points), Japeth Aguilar (12 points), and Nard Pinto (10 points) also made significant contributions to Ginebra’s victory, providing valuable scoring and support to their star players.

Converge, despite a spirited effort, couldn’t match Ginebra’s offensive firepower. Alec Stockton led the FiberXers with an impressive 32-point performance, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Kings’ balanced attack.

Justin Arana and Aljun Melecio also made notable contributions to Converge, adding 18 and 10 points, respectively.

With this victory, Barangay Ginebra solidified their hold on second place in the standings, positioning themselves well for the upcoming playoffs. They improved to a 7-3 record, assuring themselves of at least a tie for second place as the Philippine Cup eliminations drew to a close.

Looking ahead, the Kings have an important matchup looming against the NLEX Road Warriors on May 5, where they will aim to enhance their playoff positioning and potentially secure a coveted twice-to-beat advantage.

For Converge, despite the loss, they have one final opportunity to end their campaign on a positive note when they face the TNT Tropang Giga.

As the PBA Philippine Cup playoffs approach, Barangay Ginebra’s convincing victory serves as a statement of their championship aspirations, backed by a potent blend of veteran leadership and emerging talents. The Kings will aim to build on this momentum as they set their sights on deeper postseason success.
