The San Miguel Beermen surged to a commanding 2-0 series lead in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals, securing a resounding 109-85 victory over the Magnolia Hotshots at the MOA Arena in Pasay City on Sunday, February 4, 2024.

Learning from their near slip in the previous game, the Beermen exhibited heads-up basketball throughout all four quarters.

Bennie Boatwright, making a strong case for the Best Import award, led the charge with a remarkable performance, knocking down seven three-pointers and finishing with 34 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists.

San Miguel Beer’s proficiency from beyond the arc was a stark contrast to Magnolia’s struggles.

The Beermen connected on 16-of-44 three-point attempts in Game 2, while the Hotshots managed only 7-of-27. This sharpshooting prowess was a continuation from their earlier 103-95 victory, where the Beermen dominated the three-point line, sinking 10 treys compared to Magnolia’s three.

Under the guidance of Coach Jorge Gallent, the Beermen asserted their class on various fronts, leading to a convincing 24-point blowout and bringing them within two wins of reclaiming the Commissioner’s Cup throne.

With an 11-game winning streak dating back to the eliminations, San Miguel Beer aims to carry this momentum into Game 3 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday.

Boatwright set the tone early in the match, contributing back-to-back triples alongside Marcio Lassiter to establish a 31-25 lead in the opening period.

The Beermen extended their advantage to 54-41 at halftime and continued their relentless drive, creating a 21-point spread at 79-58 heading into the fourth quarter.

The entire team remained focused and determined, with Boatwright’s stellar performance complemented by double-double efforts from June Mar Fajardo (19 points, 14 rebounds) and CJ Perez (20 points).

Lassiter and Jericho Cruz added 11 and 10 points, respectively, contributing to the well-rounded scoring effort.

For the struggling Hotshots, Tyler Bey emerged as the lone bright spot, posting 22 points and 16 rebounds. However, Paul Lee continued to struggle, managing only five points.

As the Beermen aim to push the Hotshots into a challenging position, Game 3 promises to be a crucial battle at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, where San Miguel Beer will look to continue their relentless pursuit of the Commissioner’s Cup title.
