In a triumphant return to the court after a 38-game absence, Ben Simmons showcased why he is a transformative force for the Brooklyn Nets, leading them to a resounding 147-114 victory over the Utah Jazz on Monday night (Tuesday, January 30, in the Philippines).
Simmons, who had been sidelined since November 6 due to a pinched nerve in his lower back, wasted no time making an impact, finishing just shy of a triple-double in just 18 minutes of play.
Simmons’ return injected a burst of energy into the Nets, and his on-court vision was on full display as he orchestrated a fast break just seconds into the game.
Despite a minutes restriction, Simmons posted an impressive stat line of 10 points, 11 assists, and eight rebounds, showcasing his multifaceted skill set.
Teammate Mikal Bridges stole the spotlight with a career-high 33 points, providing the Nets with a formidable offensive presence alongside Simmons.
The combination of Simmons’ playmaking ability and Bridges’ scoring prowess proved too much for the Jazz to handle.
The Nets, known for their offensive firepower, set a franchise record for points scored in a regulation home game, totaling 147 points. They recorded an impressive 41 assists on 54 field goals and made 21 three-pointers, emphasizing their offensive efficiency and teamwork.
Simmons’ impact was evident on both ends of the floor, with the Nets outscoring the Jazz by 27 points during his time on the court.
His seamless integration into the team’s system and ability to elevate the play of his teammates drew praise from fellow Net, Lonnie Walker IV.
Walker said that Simmons’ ability to pass consistently elevates the team.
The latter comes at a crucial juncture for the Nets, who have faced challenges in recent weeks, losing seven of their previous eight games. With two consecutive wins, including this convincing victory over the Jazz, the Nets are regaining their rhythm and momentum.
Despite Simmons’ successful return, the Jazz struggled to match the Nets’ intensity and were outworked throughout the game, according to coach Will Hardy.
Keyonte George’s 21 points couldn’t lift the Jazz, and 17 turnovers proved costly as the Nets capitalized on the mistakes, turning them into 27 points.
Simmons’ impact extends beyond the box score, as he brings a level of familiarity to his teammates, making it easier for them to find their scoring opportunities.
As the Nets look to build on this victory, they will aim to maintain their momentum in upcoming matchups against the Phoenix Suns.
Simmons summed up his impactful return, saying that it’s always been a fast break whenever he has the ball.
