Bennie Boatwright showcased his full potential, dropping an impressive 51 points to propel the San Miguel Beermen (SMB) to their fourth consecutive victory, dismantling Terrafirma 132-110 in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, January 7, 2024.
The former USC Trojan exhibited a remarkable shooting performance, going 19-of-31 from the field, including 7-of-13 from beyond the arc. This outstanding performance nearly doubled his 26-point debut on Christmas Day, marking Boatwright as a potent offensive force for the Beermen.
Teaming up with local standout Don Trollano, who provided crucial support, SMB had little trouble securing their seventh win of the season, improving their record to 7-3. Their impressive streak positions them favorably as they head into a crucial matchup against Blackwater on Friday to close out the elimination round.
Expressing his gratitude to his coaches and teammates, Boatwright acknowledged their efforts in setting him up for success. He attributed the win to his coaches and my teammates for looking out for him.
Boatwright not only scored 51 points but also contributed 12 rebounds, three assists, and two blocked shots.
Should the Beermen emerge victorious against Blackwater, they would secure one of the coveted top four spots, granting them a twice-to-beat advantage in the upcoming quarterfinals. Boatwright’s stellar performance has undoubtedly made him a key asset in the team’s pursuit of championship glory.
Terrafirma, on the other hand, suffered their seventh consecutive loss, dropping to a 2-8 card. Their struggles were evident despite notable performances from Javi Gomez de Liano, who bounced back with 26 points, and Thomas de Thaey, who contributed 17 points and an equal number of rebounds. Stephen Holt added 13 points to the effort.
Despite the valiant attempts by Terrafirma, the sheer firepower unleashed by SMB was overwhelming. Trollano finished with 22 points, complemented by CJ Perez and Mo Tautaa with 16 points each, and Terrence Romeo contributed 12 points along with seven assists. Even playing assistant coach Chris Ross, who managed only one point, played a pivotal role with ten assists.
Boatwright’s scoring exhibition began early, amassing 23 points in the opening quarter and reaching an astounding 34 by halftime – both the highest individual point totals this season. The Beermen took control in the second quarter and further solidified their dominance in the third period, establishing a substantial lead that Terrafirma struggled to overcome.
As the final buzzer sounded, Boatwright was benched with still 2:55 left on the clock, his mission accomplished, and the Beermen comfortably ahead at 124-106. The victory sets the stage for a potentially exciting playoff run for SMB, with Boatwright emerging as a formidable force in the Commissioner’s Cup.
