Blackwater extended its perfect record in the PBA Philippine Cup with a decisive 90-78 victory over Converge on Wednesday, March 6, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Blackwater’s Christian David and RK Ilagan orchestrated a well-coordinated offensive effort, while Troy Rosario, Bradwyn Guinto, and Tyrus Hill anchored a formidable defense.

The Bossing surged to an early 30-14 lead and dominated the court, reaching an impressive 70-35 advantage by the third period.

Despite Converge’s persistent efforts, spearheaded by Alec Stockton, Schonny Winston, and Justin Arana, Blackwater maintained control. The FiberXers narrowed the gap, but time constraints ultimately worked against them.

Blackwater’s current 3-0 record mirrors its exceptional start in the 2019 Commissioner’s Cup.

Coach Jeffrey Cariaso attributed the team’s success to a well-executed defensive strategy against Converge’s key players, Justin Arana and Alec Stockton.

He underscored the existence of a strategic plan to defend Justin, acknowledging the challenge due to his exceptional skills.

He commended Alec Stockton’s outstanding performance, acknowledging the player’s patience, precision, and growing consistency. Cariaso described Stockton as “pesky and persistent” and emphasized the importance of a solid defensive approach against him.

Despite Stockton’s notable 24-point contribution and Arana’s 18 points, last year’s Best Rookie struggled scoreless in the middle quarters. Ten of Arana’s points came when the game’s outcome was determined.

Schonny Winston showcased resilience by recording a career-high 22 points, overcoming a slow start with only four points in the initial 24 minutes of play.

The victory solidifies Blackwater’s position as a formidable force in the PBA Philippine Cup, showcasing both offensive prowess and defensive prowess under Coach Cariaso’s strategic guidance.
