Don Trollano and Jericho Cruz emerged as the heroes for San Miguel Beer as they secured a hard-fought 95-92 victory over Barangay Ginebra in the PBA Philippine Cup clash at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Friday, April 5.

Despite holding an 18-point lead, the Beermen found themselves in a tight spot as Ginebra mounted a fierce comeback in the final minutes of the game. However, Trollano and Cruz stepped up when it mattered most, delivering clutch baskets to seal the win and preserve San Miguel’s perfect record in the tournament at 4-0.

Trollano’s five-point outburst and Cruz’s crucial basket down the stretch proved to be the difference-makers as the Beermen withstood Ginebra’s late surge. San Miguel coach Jorge Gallent emphasized the need for better defense following their narrow escape, acknowledging the team’s reliance on Trollano and Cruz to secure the victory.

Despite early foul trouble for key players June Mar Fajardo and Moala Tautuaa, the Beermen managed to weather the storm and maintain their composure. Fajardo and Tautuaa’s contributions were instrumental in San Miguel’s success, with both players recording double-doubles despite their foul woes.

Trollano, who earned Best Player of the Game honors with 15 points and eight rebounds, highlighted the team’s awareness of Ginebra’s never-say-die spirit. Cruz echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of staying composed in pressure situations.

CJ Perez also played a pivotal role for San Miguel, notching a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Fajardo added 14 points and 10 boards, while Tautuaa and Terrence Romeo contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively, in the Beermen’s hard-fought victory.

With the win, San Miguel maintained their position as the solo leader in the Philippine Cup standings, ahead of NLEX and NorthPort. Ginebra, meanwhile, missed an opportunity to join the top ranks and instead dropped to a tie for fourth place with Blackwater.

As the season progresses, San Miguel will look to build on their momentum and continue their winning ways, relying on the collective efforts of their roster to remain competitive in the league. With Trollano and Cruz leading the charge in clutch moments, the Beermen have shown resilience and determination in their pursuit of success in the Philippine Cup.
