EcoOil-La Salle Secures Back-To-Back PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup Championships

In a thrilling showdown at the Ynares Sports Arena, EcoOil-La Salle emerged victorious once again, successfully defending their title in the PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup with a resounding 89-74 win over Marinerong Pilipino-San Beda Monday, June 26.

The game’s outcome hinged on the outstanding performances of Kevin Quiambao and Mark Nonoy, who stepped up when it mattered the most. 

Quiambao, deserving of the MVP award, showcased his skills with 26 points and 10 rebounds, leaving a lasting impact during crucial moments of the game. Nonoy, on the other hand, contributed 14 points, including a timely three-pointer just before halftime that gave EcoOil-La Salle a slim 43-42 lead.

Assistant coach Gian Nazario, entrusted with leading the team by head coach Topex Robinson, expressed his satisfaction with the players’ consistent performance throughout the tournament. He emphasized the growth and maturity of the team as a significant factor in their success, as they handled the pressure and expectations with composure.

While Marinerong Pilipino-San Beda put up a valiant fight, erasing a nine-point deficit in the second quarter with a spirited rally led by JV Gallego, it wasn’t enough to deter the resilient Green Archers. Nonoy swiftly responded with a three-pointer, reclaiming the lead and instilling confidence in his team.

Quiambao once again showcased his dominance, scoring eight crucial points during a pivotal 17-4 run that widened EcoOil-La Salle’s lead to 60-46, leaving their opponents struggling to catch up.

Reflecting on his MVP accolade, Quiambao humbly credited his teammates and the entire coaching staff for their collective effort and dedication to secure the championship. He emphasized that their ultimate goal was not just individual recognition but the team’s success as a whole.

Contributing significantly to the Green Archers’ victory, Evan Nelle demonstrated his skills with 16 points and seven assists, while Michael Philips made his presence known with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Marinerong Pilipino-San Beda fought admirably, with Yukien Andrada leading the charge with 15 points, supported by Damie Cuntapay and James Payosing, who contributed 12 points each. However, their 23 turnovers proved costly, resulting in 29 points for EcoOil-La Salle.

The championship game also highlighted EcoOil-La Salle’s dominance in certain aspects of the game, as they secured a commanding 20-7 advantage in fast break points and a 13-6 edge in second-chance points.

With their back-to-back championships, EcoOil-La Salle proved their mettle and cemented their status as a force to be reckoned with in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup. The team’s journey was a testament to their resilience, teamwork, and unwavering determination to succeed.
