4 min read

In a thrilling Father’s Day showdown, the Converge FiberXers orchestrated a stunning comeback from a 16-point deficit to defeat the San Miguel Beermen in overtime, claiming a nail-biting 113-111 victory at the Ynares Sports Arena. Jerrick Balanza played the hero, sinking the game-winning layup in the closing seconds to secure the exhilarating win for his team.

The preseason game, part of the PBA on Tour series presented by Arena Plus and sponsored by Bingo Plus, featured high-intensity basketball and showcased the resilience of the FiberXers. Despite trailing for the majority of the contest, they never lost hope and displayed unwavering determination until the final buzzer.

Led by interim coach Franco Atienza, the FiberXers rallied behind the impressive performances of Jeric Teng, Justin Arana, Kevin Racal, Barkley Ebona, and Alec Stockton. These five players spearheaded the team’s spirited fightback in the fourth quarter, ultimately propelling Converge to victory. Balanza and Mike Nieto also contributed significantly, with all seven players finishing the game in double figures.

Stockton was instrumental in the FiberXers’ resurgence, delivering a team-high 23 points, including a clutch three-pointer that tied the game at 111 with just 17 seconds remaining in regulation play. Following Stockton’s heroics, the FiberXers tightened their defense, preventing San Miguel from finding a decent shot opportunity and forcing the game into overtime.

During the additional period, both teams battled intensely, exchanging blows and refusing to back down. However, it was Balanza’s steal and a subsequent layup off an assist from Stockton that ultimately sealed the fate of the Beermen. With a mere 1.5 seconds left on the clock, the FiberXers celebrated their hard-fought victory, ending a three-game losing streak and improving their record to 2-3.

San Miguel’s Jericho Cruz showcased an exceptional performance, notching a career-high 41 points. However, his stellar efforts were in vain as the Beermen succumbed to their third consecutive defeat, dropping to a 3-3 record. The absence of Terrence Romeo in the second half due to injury further compounded San Miguel’s challenges.

Despite the absence of head coach Aldin Ayo, Converge displayed exceptional resilience and determination under the guidance of Assistant Coach Atienza. The team’s ability to orchestrate an impressive comeback against a formidable opponent speaks volumes about their character and potential.

The FiberXers’ triumph over the Beermen in this thrilling Father’s Day clash is a testament to the unpredictable and captivating nature of basketball. The game showcased the essence of sportsmanship, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of victory. As the PBA on Tour series continues, fans eagerly anticipate more exhilarating matchups and awe-inspiring performances from these exceptional athletes.
