Ian Sangalang powered Magnolia to a decisive 104-97 victory over the previously streaking NorthPort in the PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday night, April 10 t at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Sangalang delivered a career-best performance, pouring in 32 points and grabbing 13 rebounds to lead the Hotshots to victory. His outstanding effort, surpassing his previous high of 29 points achieved in the 2028 All-Filipino finals, set the tone for Magnolia’s resurgence.

The Hotshots received solid contributions across the board, with James Laput adding 14 points, while Paul Lee, Jerric Ahanmisi, and Mark Barroca each contributed 13 points. Barroca also recorded an impressive double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. 

Calvin Abueva made his return after serving a one-game suspension, making his presence felt with 12 rebounds, seven assists, and six points.

Magnolia’s head coach, Chito Victolero, highlighted the importance of improving their offensive execution after suffering two consecutive losses where they struggled to score. Victolero emphasized the significance of ball movement, and the Hotshots responded with a strong offensive showing, tallying 31 assists compared to their average of 16 in the previous defeats.

Sangalang reflected on the team’s mindset following back-to-back losses, emphasizing how those defeats served as a wake-up call for the Hotshots. His exceptional performance earned him recognition as only the fourth player in Season 48 to achieve a 30-10 double-double, joining elite company alongside Leonard Santillan, Arvin Tolentino, and Robert Bolick.

Despite a late surge from NorthPort led by Fran Yu, Magnolia maintained their composure and executed key plays down the stretch. Holding a 100-94 lead with 37 seconds remaining, Barroca’s clutch jumper followed by Lee’s free throws sealed the victory for the Hotshots, securing their second win of the tournament.

The victory not only halted NorthPort’s four-game winning streak but also propelled Magnolia to an even 2-2 record, providing them with momentum as they look to build on this performance in upcoming matches. 

Victolero’s squad demonstrated resilience and determination, capitalizing on Sangalang’s stellar outing to secure a pivotal win in the Philippine Cup campaign.
