Magnolia Hotshots scores 7th straight win at the expense of San  Miguel Beermen

3 min read

The Magnolia Hotshots continued their scorching run in the PBA Season 48 Commissioner’s Cup, establishing a franchise record with a seventh consecutive win. The Hotshots prevailed 94-90 in a hard-fought battle against the San Miguel Beermen at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig on Sunday, December 10, 2023, maintaining their perfect start to the conference.
Tyler Bey, the towering force for Magnolia, delivered yet another monster performance with 31 points and an impressive 21 rebounds. While key players like Jio Jalalon, James Laput, and Mark Barroca had their moments, it was Aris Dionisio who stole the spotlight in the final moments. Dionisio, a 6-foot-5 forward, stepped up when it mattered most, converting four crucial free throws in the last 10 seconds of the game.
Dionisio’s clutch free throws secured the victory and preserved Tyler Bey’s remarkable 30-20 outing, solidifying Magnolia’s place in PBA history. The win marked the franchise’s best start to a conference, matching the achievement of TNT in the 2019 Governors’ Cup under the coaching duo of Bong Ravena and Mark Dickel.
Coach Chito Victolero and his resilient squad have not only secured a playoff spot early in the conference but have also positioned themselves as frontrunners in the race for a coveted twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, veteran sharpshooter Paul Lee entered the game with the opportunity to become solo No. 10 in the league’s all-time list for most three-pointers. However, Lee faced a challenging night, limited to 19 minutes of action and a 1-6 field-goal clip, including 0-of-2 from beyond the arc.
Despite Lee’s struggles, the Hotshots battled toe-to-toe with the Beermen throughout the first three quarters, eventually building a 10-point lead entering the game’s final two minutes. However, the resilient Beermen, despite missing key players like June Mar Fajardo, Terrence Romeo, Jeron Teng, Vic Manuel, and Kyt Jimenez, staged a late comeback.
Ivan Aska’s clutch shot, combined with back-to-back three-pointers from Chris Ross and Jericho Cruz, narrowed the gap to 88-90 with 33 seconds left on the clock. The Beermen resorted to intentional fouls to send Magnolia to the free-throw line, hoping to extend the game.
However, Aris Dionisio’s composed performance under pressure secured the victory for the Hotshots, dealing San Miguel Beer their second consecutive loss and third in six games overall. The Beermen continue to grapple with challenges, missing key contributors, and facing an uphill battle in the competitive PBA season.
