SHEER DOMINANCE. The Magnolia Hotshots overpowers NorthPort in a 112-74 victory in their PBA Commissioner's Cup encounter at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Friday, November 17, 2023.

Magnolia Hotshots delivered a commanding performance, overpowering NorthPort with a resounding 112-74 victory and asserting their dominance in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Friday, November 17, 2023.

From the onset, the Hotshots flawlessly executed their game plan, establishing a decisive 28-8 lead early on and maintaining control throughout the matchup. The team’s defensive strategy effectively neutralized NorthPort’s import, Venky Jois, limiting his impact in the paint and contributing to the most lopsided victory witnessed in the early stages of the season.

Coach Chito Victolero attributed the team’s success to the players’ unwavering determination, emphasizing their focused preparation and translating into an impressive on-court performance. The defensive approach centered around collapsing on Jois whenever he attempted to attack the basket, creating a formidable barrier that restricted the import’s effectiveness. Despite Jois managing to contribute 16 points and eight rebounds, it was insufficient to impede Magnolia’s relentless onslaught.

Arvin Tolentino emerged as NorthPort’s leading scorer with 23 points, yet the majority of his output came in the fourth quarter, unable to halt Magnolia’s growing lead, which reached 82-47 by the end of the third quarter.

Mark Barroca, making a significant impact off the bench, played a pivotal role, contributing 17 points and highlighting the team’s focus on building a killer instinct. “Nag-bi-build kami ng parang killer instinct (We’re building a killer instinct),” stated Barroca in a PBA report.

“Kasi every time na up kami nu’ng pre-season, nu’ng mga tuneup games namin nag-relax kami, eh, especially sa third quarter. So nag-bi-build kami ng character, ng killer instinct talaga (Because every time we were up in the preseason, in our tune-up games, we relaxed, especially in the third quarter. So we’re building character, a real killer instinct).”

Paul Lee showcased his scoring and playmaking abilities with 16 points and six assists, while Jio Jalalon and Ian Sangalang each added 11 markers, contributing to Magnolia’s well-rounded offensive performance.

With this commanding victory, Magnolia Hotshots not only secured their solo leadership but also sent a clear message to the league about their potential in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
