The Meralco Bolts overcame the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, sealing a hard-fought 121-117 victory in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday night, March 2, 2024.

Despite losing Chris Newsome early due to foul trouble, the Bolts displayed resilience and unity to bounce back from a disappointing defeat against Blackwater earlier in the week.

The game started with Meralco taking control, leading by as much as 14 points. However, Rain or Shine mounted a formidable comeback, staging an endgame siege to challenge the Bolts. The Elasto Painters fought back from a 55-69 deficit, setting the stage for a nail-biting finish.

One crucial moment came in the fourth quarter when Norbert Torres sank a side-stepping three-pointer, disrupting Rain or Shine’s momentum and temporarily halting their surge.

As the clock wound down, the Elasto Painters had a chance to steal the game, possessing the ball with 22 seconds remaining and the score tied at 102.

Andrei Caracut, entrusted with the game-winning attempt, found an open lane to the basket but missed a layup. The miss sent the game into overtime, where the Bolts seized control with a 7-0 run led by the impressive Bong Quinto.

Quinto, along with standout performances from Allein Maliksi, Cliff Hodge, and Norbert Torres, proved instrumental in Meralco’s overtime success. Maliksi shone as the top scorer for the Bolts, contributing 26 points, including three crucial three-pointers.

Quinto, Torres, and Hodge each added 16 points, showcasing their resilience in the absence of Newsome.

Despite Newsome fouling out early, his impact was evident with 11 rebounds and two assists in just 29 minutes of play. The Bolts’ collective effort allowed them to secure the win and put them in the win column, while Rain or Shine remains winless after two starts.

Rain or Shine relied heavily on the combined 54-point output from Adrian Nocum (29 points) and Santi Santillan (25 points). Gian Mamuyac’s 15-point contribution in the second half fueled the Elasto Painters’ endgame charge, but it wasn’t enough to prevent their downfall in overtime.

Beau Belga also played a crucial role for Rain or Shine with nine points and nine rebounds, but their efforts ultimately faltered in the face of Meralco’s late-game surge. The Bolts showcased their tenacity, overcoming adversity to secure a well-deserved victory in an intense and closely contested matchup.
