The New York Knicks delivered a resounding 122-84 blowout to the defending NBA champions, the Denver Nuggets, on Thursday night (Friday, January 26, in the Philippines).
Led by the dynamic duo of OG Anunoby and Jalen Brunson, the Knicks handed the Nuggets their most lopsided defeat of the season.
Anunoby showcased his scoring prowess, contributing 26 points, while Brunson added 21, setting the tone for a Knicks team that has been on a remarkable surge.
This victory marked their fifth consecutive win and the 11th triumph in the last 13 games since acquiring Anunoby from the Toronto Raptors.
Brunson said Anunoby has become more comfortable, having played exceptionally well and showing aggressiveness on both sides of the ball.
The Knicks’ balanced offensive attack was evident, with Quentin Grimes scoring 19 points, Julius Randle contributing 17, and Donte DiVincenzo adding 16.
The team’s chemistry and cohesion were on full display, as they shot an impressive 52.9% from the field and 39.5% from beyond the arc.
New York seized control from the outset, never trailing in the game. Brunson, DiVincenzo, and Randle set the tone early, combining for 25 points to give the Knicks a commanding 33-21 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The team maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the contest, leaving the Nuggets struggling to find answers.
While the victory might be considered a signature win for the surging Knicks, Randle downplayed its significance in the regular season context. He said he could care less, liking the fact that they won and they’re building the right habits.
The Nuggets, on the other hand, faced a challenging night with Nikola Jokic putting up a commendable effort with 31 points and 11 rebounds. However, the rest of the team struggled to make an impact. The Nuggets’ three-game winning streak came to an abrupt end, and their 5-of-26 shooting from 3-point range added to their offensive woes.
Denver coach Mike Malone acknowledged the disappointment in the team’s performance, particularly at the end of their road trip.
Malone said he thought it was a very disappointing ending to the road trip as they didn’t want to be blown out. He added that they will live to fight another day.
The Knicks’ victory solidifies their standing as a force to be reckoned with in the NBA, while the Nuggets will regroup and aim to bounce back in their upcoming matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers.
The resounding win serves as a testament to the Knicks’ resurgence and their ability to compete at the highest level in the league.
