NLEX Road Warriors survive NorthPort sans Alas

3 min read
NO ALAS, NO PROBLEM. Despite the absence of Kevin Alax, NLEX Road Warriors survive past NorthPort, 112-104, in their PBA Commissioner’s Cup game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on November 22, 2023.

In a challenging scenario where the NLEX Road Warriors had to navigate the absence of injured guard Kevin Alas, the team’s bevy of guards stepped up admirably to fill the void.

Coach Frankie Lim acknowledged the difficulty of adjusting their plays without the 32-year-old Alas, who plays a pivotal role in their pick-and-roll strategy.

Lim emphasized the challenge they faced due to the absence of Kevin, who was typically relied upon for their pick-and-roll plays.

Currently, they lack a player with the same capabilities to effectively execute the pick and roll, affecting their offensive strategies.

However, despite this setback, the Road Warriors showcased resilience in their first game without their team captain.

Don Trollano, in particular, took charge and delivered a stellar performance in a 112-104 victory over Northport, bringing the team’s record to an even 2-2 in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on November 22, 2023.

Trollano played a pivotal role, contributing 29 points, with 18 coming in the first half to set the tone for the match. Coach Lim emphasized the importance of Trollano getting into his rhythm early in the game, especially given his capability as a streak shooter. Trollano’s proficiency was evident as he went 4-of-9 from three-point range.

However, Trollano was not the sole contributor in Alas’s absence. Thomas Robinson scored 30 points with 18 boards.

Fil-Am guard Rob Herndon added eight points, rookie Richie Rodger contributed seven points as part of the starting unit, and sophomore Hesed Gabo played extended minutes while tending to the backcourt duties.

Coach Lim lauded Rob Herndon and Trollano for doing well in the game and Richie Rodgers, saying that they provided a solid game from the team amid Alas’ absence.

Lim also pointed out the need for leadership in the point guard position, addressing the non-execution of plays during the game. He emphasized that this aspect would be a focal point in their upcoming practices as they continue to adapt to the absence of Alas.

Despite the initial challenges, the NLEX Road Warriors demonstrated resilience and depth in their roster, showcasing that they have the capability to adjust and succeed even in the face of significant setbacks. The win against Northport not only evened their

record but also signaled the team’s determination to overcome obstacles and continue competing at a high level in the Commissioner’s Cup.
