The Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters ignited their season with a resounding victory over the Terrafirma Dyip, 94-78, in the PBA Season 48 Philippine Cup at the  PhilSports Arena in Pasig on Wednesday night, March 13, 2024.

Spearheaded by the veteran prowess of RR Garcia, the Fuel Masters showcased a collective effort that propelled them to their first win of the season.

Garcia, stepping up in the absence of the young sensation Tyler Tio, delivered a vintage performance reminiscent of his prime years. With a game-high 20 points and a career-high 10 assists, Garcia orchestrated the offense with precision, guiding the Fuel Masters to a commanding win.

The absence of top draft selection Stephen Holt due to injury compounded Terrafirma’s woes, leaving them vulnerable against a determined Phoenix squad hungry for victory.

Despite a valiant effort from the Dyip, who put up stiff resistance throughout the game, the Fuel Masters maintained their composure and seized control when it mattered most.

Assistant coach Paolo Dizon praised the team’s defensive intensity and unity, emphasizing their adherence to the game plan set forth by head coach Jamike Jarin. Dizon highlighted the team’s collective effort in returning to their brand of basketball, characterized by selflessness and cohesion.

Garcia, embodying the spirit of resilience and determination, emphasized the need for players to step up in the face of adversity. With unwavering trust from Coach Jamike, Garcia seized the opportunity to make a significant impact, delivering a stellar double-double performance while demonstrating efficiency and composure on the court.

The former UAAP MVP showcased his scoring prowess, shooting an impressive 9-of-14 from the field, showcasing his ability to capitalize on opportunities and contribute to the team’s success. Joining Garcia in the spotlight were standout performances from Jason Perkins, Ken Tuffin, and Larry Muyang, who each played pivotal roles in securing the victory.

Perkins contributed 18 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, while Tuffin added 17 markers and nine boards, showcasing their versatility and impact on both ends of the floor. Muyang chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds, underscoring the depth of the Fuel Masters’ roster and their ability to produce when called upon.

Despite the loss, Terrafirma found solace in the efforts of Javi Gomez de Liano and Juami Tiongson, who led the charge in the absence of Holt. Eric Camson also made notable contributions, finishing with 10 points to round out Dyip’s scoring efforts.
