Rain or Shine continued its remarkable resurgence with a fifth consecutive victory, securing an outright entry into the PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoffs by defeating TNT, 119-112, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Friday night, January 5, 2024.

The Elasto Painters relied on their trademark balanced attack to counter the explosive duo of debuting TNT import Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson and Calvin Oftana, who combined for 87 points.

The victory marked a significant achievement for Rain or Shine, as they clinched a quarterfinal berth with a 5-5 win-loss record after a challenging 0-5 start to the season.

Rain or Shine became the seventh team to secure a spot in the quarters, leaving TNT (4-6) and NLEX (3-6) to battle for the last remaining slot in the post-eliminations play.

The Tropang Giga face the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters in their final assignment, while the Road Warriors close out their elimination round against the Converge FiberXers and the Barangay Ginebra Kings.

Coach Yeng Guiao’s E-Painters are now assured of a playoff berth, regardless of the result of their upcoming game against the FiberXers on January 14. Rain or Shine’s automatic passage was sealed with the crucial win over TNT, achieved through a strong finish when they were two points down with 3:49 left to play.

Tree Treadwell’s stellar performance with 25 points and 24 rebounds, along with Andre Caracut’s 23 points, including key free throws down the stretch, propelled the E-Painters past TNT. Despite an explosive PBA debut from Hollis-Jefferson, who scored 50 points, Rain or Shine’s collective effort prevailed.

Rey Nambatac contributed 19 points, Beau Belga added 16, and Santi Santillan chipped in 10 as the E-Painters outlasted a TNT team heavily relying on Hollis-Jefferson and local star Oftana, who scored 37.

While Rahlir and Oftana had a formidable 44 and 27 points through the first three quarters, Rain or Shine capitalized on their opponents’ loss of steam, securing their fifth consecutive win after triumphs over Blackwater, NLEX, Magnolia, and Terrafirma.

Despite the possibility of ending up in a three-way tie for seventh to ninth places, Rain or Shine remains confident in securing an outright quarters entry based on a superior quotient. As they continue their impressive streak, the E-Painters are gearing up for the playoffs with newfound confidence and momentum.
