Rain or Shine continued their dominant run with a convincing 115-105 victory over a struggling NorthPort team on Wednesday, April 17, in the PBA Philippine Cup, extending their winning streak to five games at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Beau Belga spearheaded Rain or Shine’s charge with a career-high 28 points, 18 of which came in the first half. His exceptional performance set the tone early for the Elasto Painters, who surged to a commanding 22-point lead in the first half and maintained control throughout the game despite NorthPort’s attempts at a comeback.

Head coach Yeng Guiao attributed the victory to their strong start, emphasizing the importance of building an early lead. “I think primarily this win is because we had a good start,” said Guiao. “We had a 22-point lead in the first half. They made a run, but we managed to hold on. If it were not for that good start, it would have been a battle until the end.”

NorthPort struggled from the onset, missing their first six shots and committing multiple turnovers, allowing Rain or Shine to jump to a 12-0 lead. The Elasto Painters extended their advantage to 40-18 before NorthPort rallied to narrow the deficit to 10 points by halftime.

Despite a spirited effort by Zav Lucero and Allyn Bulanadi of NorthPort, Rain or Shine maintained their lead throughout the game. Jhonard Clarito, Mark Borboran, and Belga helped extend Rain or Shine’s lead to 81-72 by the end of the third quarter, and Adrian Nocum ensured they stayed in control during the final stretch.

Lucero had a career-high 29 points and seven rebounds, while Bulanadi added 26 points in a valiant effort for NorthPort. However, the Batang Pier struggled with outside shooting, making only three of their 25 three-point attempts and allowing Rain or Shine to capitalize on free throws.

Belga was instrumental for Rain or Shine, shooting an efficient 12-of-17 from the field, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, and contributing 13 rebounds and seven assists. Guiao praised Belga’s consistency and emphasized his importance to the team, especially with key players like Keith Datu and Luis Villegas unavailable.

Guiao expressed satisfaction with Belga’s consistency and emphasized his crucial role for the team, particularly in the absence of Keith Datu and Luis Villegas, who are sidelined due to injury, highlighting how Belga has effectively filled the void in their absence.

Rain or Shine’s victory solidifies their position among the top eight teams in the standings, a remarkable turnaround after a challenging 0-4 start to the season. With their current form, Rain or Shine looks poised to continue their success in the upcoming games of the PBA Philippine Cup.
