The San Miguel Beermen secured an outright playoff berth in the PBA Philippine Cup with an emphatic 120-100 victory over the struggling NorthPort Batang Pier at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City on April 21.

Despite playing their second game in three nights, CJ Perez and the Beermen showcased unwavering energy and determination, delivering a performance marked by precision and intensity. Perez led the charge with a game-high 29 points, all of which came in the first three quarters, complemented by nine rebounds, six assists, and stellar defensive play.

San Miguel’s offensive firepower extended beyond Perez, with Mo Tautuaa (15 points), Marcio Lassiter (14 points), Don Trollano (13 points), June Mar Fajardo (12 points), and Jeron Teng (10 points) all contributing double-digit scoring efforts. The Beermen’s balanced attack overwhelmed NorthPort, propelling them to their seventh consecutive victory in the tournament.

Coach Jorge Gallent emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and preparation as they look ahead to a highly anticipated showdown against Commissioner’s Cup finals rival, Magnolia, on Friday. Despite securing a playoff berth, he emphasized the team’s pursuit of a top-two finish and the accompanying win-once bonus in the quarterfinals.

He also said that they will treat Magnolia as a serious threat as they are eyeing the twice-to-beat advantage. They will be ready to execute their game plan and overcome the challenge.

The Beermen’s victory further solidifies their standing in the playoff race, positioning them as a formidable contender in the quest for the championship. With Magnolia closely trailing with a 5-2 record, the upcoming clash promises to be a critical matchup with playoff implications.

Meanwhile, NorthPort’s struggles continued as they suffered their fourth consecutive defeat, slipping to seventh place in the standings with a 4-5 record. The Batang Pier faced a daunting challenge against the relentless Beermen, unable to match their opponent’s intensity throughout the game.

San Miguel’s dominance was exemplified by their collective effort, highlighted by exceptional ball movement that led to an impressive 31 assists. Coach Gallent emphasized the significance of team play, acknowledging that the Beermen’s success hinges on their ability to share the ball effectively.

He told his players that they would become a great team if they shared the ball, underscoring teamwork and execution are vital in their quest for the championship trophy.
