The San Miguel Beermen exacted sweet revenge and secured a coveted spot in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals by defeating Barangay Ginebra, 94-91, in a hard-fought battle at the MOA Arena in Pasay City on Sunday, January 28, 2024.
Brimming with determination, the Beermen, led by the impressive performance of Bennie Boatwright, toppled Ginebra, exacting sweet revenge for their painful 3-0 defeat in the semifinals of the last Governors Cup.
San Miguel’s triumphant journey to the finals included earlier victories in Game One (92-90) and Game Two (106-96).
The series sweep not only symbolized sweet revenge but also marked the end of Ginebra’s reign, the very team that had claimed victory dramatically in the previous year’s Commissioner’s Cup against the Bay Area Dragons.
For Coach Jorge Gallent and his resilient squad, this victory was a testament to their determination and unity. The Beermen showcased their championship pedigree, advancing to the finals with Boatwright, June Mar Fajardo, and Jericho Cruz leading the charge.
Now, they await the winner of the Magnolia-Phoenix showdown in what promises to be an electrifying championship series.
As the league’s winningest ball club, San Miguel has a storied history in the Commissioner’s Cup, with their last title coming in 2019 with import Chris McCullough.
The road to the championship has been a bit barren for the Beermen since then, but with their eyes set on the prize, they are poised to make a strong bid for the title under Coach Gallent’s guidance.
Boatwright, the star of the clincher, delivered a stellar performance with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Fajardo, a force to be reckoned with, contributed a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards, while Cruz made a significant impact off the bench, adding 17 points, including two crucial three-pointers.
The supporting cast played their roles admirably, with Marcio Lassiter continuing his Game 2 excellence by contributing 14 points, and CJ Perez adding 11 points along with nine boards.
The game was a tight see-saw battle until the Beermen seized control with a 15-10 run to start the fourth quarter.
Displaying resilience and grit, they held firm until the final buzzer, putting an end to Ginebra’s bid and securing their place in the finals.
As San Miguel looks forward to the championship series, the Beermen are eager to add another title to their illustrious history and bring home the Commissioner’s Cup, reigniting the championship fervor that has defined this powerhouse team for years. The stage is set for a finals showdown, and San Miguel is ready to make their mark once again.
