Jeremy Sochan and Victor Wembanyama led the San Antonio Spurs to a 116-100 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night (Saturday, January 27, in the Philippines).
Sochan notched an impressive 31 points and 14 rebounds, while Wembanyama contributed 23 points and 12 rebounds, showcasing their prowess on both ends of the court.
Despite a remarkable performance from the Trail Blazers’ Anfernee Simons, who scored an impressive 40 points and dished out 10 assists, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Spurs’ dynamic duo.
Sochan, in particular, was instrumental in the victory, displaying athleticism and strength that proved crucial in securing the win.
Sochan, who fell just two points short of his career-high, expressed his determination to assert himself physically on the court. He said that sometimes he forgets how athletic he can be. He underscored how he just has to go in strong.
Keldon Johnson added 21 points for the Spurs, and Devin Vassell contributed 15, contributing to San Antonio’s most successful month this season with four wins in January.
Deandre Ayton had a double-double for the Trail Blazers with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
However, Simons’ spectacular 16-point performance in the fourth quarter wasn’t sufficient to overcome the Spurs’ double-digit lead.
The Spurs extended their lead to 18 points in the final quarter, marking their first double-digit lead since January 12 against Charlotte.
Sochan, who struggled early in the season, has been on an upward trajectory since the team adjusted its lineup in December.
At 6-foot-8, Sochan initially faced challenges when positioned as the starting point guard in a larger lineup featuring 7-footers like Wembanyama and Zach Collins.
However, the Spurs abandoned that strategy in December, and Sochan has since flourished. Against the Trail Blazers, he achieved a season-high in rebounds and matched a career-high with four 3-pointers.
Wembanyama, who jumpstarted his game against the Trail Blazers, played a crucial role for the Spurs. His defensive efforts, including a blocked shot that led to a 3-pointer by Jones, showcased his impact on both ends of the court.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich highlighted the team’s ball-sharing prowess, as they have done that a lot this season, getting the needed number of assists for a chance to win.
The victory against the Trail Blazers marked the second game of a seven-game homestand for the Spurs, who are set to embark on their annual three-week road trip due to the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo taking over the Frost Bank Center.
