Golden State Warriors sharpshooter Stephen Curry and New York Liberty rising star Sabrina Ionescu put on a spectacular show, with Curry ultimately edging out Ionescu by a slim margin of 29-26 in the inaugural Steph vs. Sabrina 3-point competition at the All-Star Saturday night (Sunday, February 18, in the Philippines).
The contest was not just a battle of skills but a groundbreaking event, marking the first time the NBA and WNBA stars went head-to-head in a 3-point shootout.
The friendly competition was a result of a challenge thrown down after Ionescu shattered Curry’s NBA shootout record last year, winning the WNBA’s 3-point shootout with an impressive 37 points.
The anticipation surrounding the matchup turned it into the main event of the night, capturing the attention and admiration of fans from both leagues.
Curry, known as the NBA’s all-time 3-point king, faced a formidable opponent in Ionescu, whose shooting prowess and quick start set the stage for a nail-biting finish.
Ionescu showcased her skills by making 18 of 27 shots, starting the competition with a perfect 7 for 7.
Utilizing the WNBA 3-point line and a slightly smaller ball, she put up 26 points. The unconventional elements, including a lime-green glass floor in a football stadium, added to the uniqueness of the contest.
Curry, undeterred by Ionescu’s strong start, rallied in the final moments, making nine of his last 10 shots to secure the victory.
The combined shooting percentage of 39 for 54 (72%) highlighted the exceptional talent of both players in an unforgettable exhibition.
The event entertained and served a philanthropic purpose, raising money for each player’s foundation.
As Curry walked away with a championship belt adorned with images of goats, symbolizing the Greatest of All Time, both competitors left the court with smiles, having contributed to a historic and charitable moment.
Post-game, Curry, and Ionescu expressed their desire for this unique event to become a tradition, possibly with added partners next year when the All-Star weekend takes place in San Francisco.
While the competition was intense, the camaraderie and mutual respect between Curry and Ionescu were evident, emphasizing the positive impact of such crossovers between the NBA and WNBA.
The event transcended the realm of competition, leaving a lasting impression on fans and players alike.
As Ionescu reflected on the experience, she emphasized the significance of being on the All-Star stage and the inspiration it provides for the next generation.
The Steph vs. Sabrina shootout showcased their remarkable talents and underscored the unity and mutual support within the basketball community, creating a memory that will be cherished for years to come.
