Head coach Steve Kerr expressed his enthusiasm about the team’s formation, highlighting the collaboration with youth coach Sean Miller in assembling the squad of 12 promising NBA players.
Kerr consulted with Miller, who brings valuable experience as the USA men’s Under-19 junior national team’s head coach. Under Miller’s guidance, the team achieved an impeccable 7-0 record and secured a gold medal at the 2015 FIBA Under-19 World Championship.
The discussions with Miller and insights from former head coach Greg Popovich aided Kerr in finalizing the composition of Team USA. Kerr emphasized the team’s versatility on the court, acknowledging Miller’s knowledge of international basketball and the world stage.
Among the notable young players in the final roster is Paolo Banchero, this season’s NBA Rookie of the Year. Banchero joins a talented lineup consisting of Mikal Bridges, Jalen Brunson, Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton, Josh Hart, Brandon Ingram, Jaren Jackson Jr., Cam Johnson, Walker Kessler, Bobby Portis, and Austin Reaves.
Several team members possess Nike Hoop Summit experience, including NBA champion Bobby Portis (2013), Jalen Brunson (2015), Brandon Ingram (2015), and Jaren Jackson Jr. (2017). Walker Kessler, who earned NBA All-Rookie honors last season, was selected for the 2020 USA Nike Hoop Summit Team, which unfortunately got canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
