Terrafirma showcased a dominant performance led by Juami Tiongson’s explosive scoring and Stephen Holt’s all-around brilliance, defeating Converge 107-99 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Friday, March 1, at the start of their PBA Philippine Cup campaign.

Tiongson, who poured in an impressive 30 points, and Holt, who recorded a double-double, set the tone early for Terrafirma. Their scorching start ignited the rest of the Dyip, allowing them to establish a commanding lead that reached as high as 24 points.

Despite Converge’s persistent attempts at a comeback, Terrafirma effectively shut down each uprising, snapping an eight-game losing streak and securing a long-awaited victory over their rivals.

Coach Johnedel Cardel attributed the triumph to his team’s hard work, particularly on the defensive end.

After finishing the previous season with a 2-9 record and a 10th-place finish in the Commissioner’s Cup, Terrafirma focused on shoring up their defense to overcome the challenges of taller opponents.

Cardel said their hard work paid off, and their team defense strategy bode well for the team as they were not equipped for man-to-man defense.

Isaac Go contributed 13 points and five rebounds, while Gelo Alolino and Javi Gomez de Liano added 10 points each. JP Calvo impressed with six points, and as many assists, and matched Holt’s five steals, earning praise from Coach Cardel.

Holt, a seasoned professional with ten years of experience, stressed the significance of maintaining consistency and exhibiting leadership. Speaking about his commitment, he expressed a desire to continue his performance from the previous game.

He chose to remain in Manila instead of returning to the United States, opting not to take a vacation. During this period, he dedicated his time to daily gym sessions, focusing on weight training until the team commenced formal training.

Despite the efforts of Alec Stockton, Justin Arana, Sonny Winston, and Bryan Santos, Converge couldn’t escape a four-game losing streak, bringing their record to 1-10 from the last conference.

The FiberXers displayed resilience, narrowing the gap to six points three times in the final two minutes.

However, Terrafirma’s response, led by Tiongson and Alolino, ensured their hard-fought victory.

Terrafirma’s impressive performance in this season opener sets a positive tone for their campaign, signaling a potential turnaround from their struggles in the previous conference.
